Candidate to President of Company: "I Want Your Job."

We've had a candidate on an interview for a manager's position reporting to the President of the company. The President was a fairly young/early in his career, (mid 40s), and no intention of retiring anytime soon. The candidate who was interviewing had a stellar twenty plus year career and was more senior than the President. The President over dinner asked the candidate, "where do you want to be in five years?" The candidate responded with, "I want YOUR job." Needless to say, before dessert could be ordered, the "dinner" meeting ended with the President stating; "I have to go tend to an emergency" and left the meeting rather abruptly. Granted, the candidate had not been called back... Usually if you're not into a candidate, being straight forward but not brash in your rejection for them as a candidate for that position. Although the role you're interviewing them for may not be a fit, perhaps you could use them in another role in the future. Translation-don't ever burn a bridge... TJNTIY.
